After 18 years on the bench, Judge Robert J. Egan will retire this month.
Judge Egan began his journey at Mercer University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in political science. After graduation, he served in the United States Army as a platoon TOW missile gunner for one year before being promoted to Company Training Non-Commissioned Officer. During his time in the military, he was accepted into the University of Florida's Fredric G. Levin College of Law, where he graduated with honors.
Shortly after graduating, he co-founded the Law Offices of Leon & Egan and practiced as a private attorney for 15 years. In 2008, he was appointed to the Ninth Circuit by Governor Charlie Crist, filling the vacancy created by the elevation of Judge Jay P. Cohen.
Throughout his time on the bench, Judge Egan has served in the juvenile, civil, and criminal divisions, including Administrative Judge in Orange County Juvenile, as well as the Associate Administrative Judge in Circuit Criminal, Orange County Criminal, Juvenile Delinquency and Dependency, and Osceola County Circuit and County Courts. He currently serves as the Administrative Judge in Juvenile Delinquency and Dependency.
Beyond the courtroom, Judge Egan has led our Inside the Courts annual educational program, launched our Exhibit A: Family Court Art Challenge in partnership with Orange County Public Schools, and previously continued our Brown Bag Luncheon series. He has also served as a professor at Barry University College of Law and Florida A&M College of Law.
Over the years at the Ninth Circuit, he has been both a friend and mentor to many, and his impact on our circuit will be felt for years to come.
We thank you, Judge Egan, for your dedication and service. We wish you all the best in retirement.
Please join us in celebrating the Honorable Robert J. Egan on April 24, 2026, at 4 p.m. at the Orange County Courthouse in the Jury Assembly Room.
